Training Opportunities

Come and Train with FPAC!

FPAC offers regular training sessions for non-ensemble members to experience and create with the Viewpoints.  If you are interested in learning more about this relatively new theatrical philosophy, please get in touch.

A bit of background of the Viewpoints & Matthew Hahn, the artistic director of FPAC who has been training in & facilitating Viewpoints workshops for almost 30 years:

Viewpoints originated from choreographer Mary Overlie and was expanded upon by stage directors Anne Bogart & Steppenwolf Theater Company’s Tina Landau. In The Viewpoints Book by Anne Bogart & Tina Landau, they introduce viewpoints this way:

Viewpoints is a philosophy translated into a technique for (1) training performers; (2) building ensemble; and (3) creating movement for the stage.

Viewpoints is a set of names given to certain principles of movement through time and space; these names constitute a language for talking about what happens onstage.

Viewpoints is points of awareness that a performer or creator makes use of while working.  Viewpoints and composition offer an alternative to conventional approaches to acting, directing, playwriting and design. They represent a clear-cut procedure and attitude that is non-hierarchical, practical and collaborative in nature.

As a company, FPAC has embraced Viewpoints as a central tennant in its creative collaboration in particular the horizontal rather than vertical non-heirarchical structure that it offers.

Matthew first encountered Anne Bogart at Indiana University where she was a guest lecturer during the SITI production of Cabin Pressure at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1993.  Since then, he has trained with Ms. Bogart at the Abbey Theatre and Central School of Speech & Drama and with her company, SITI, in New York City.  He has also led numerous Viewpoints workshops at RADA, Central School of Speech & Drama, & Goldsmiths College, amongst other drama schools and universities.  As an international theatre director, he has co-created productions utilizing the technique to build ensembles and to devise new work.
