We are proud to announce that we have secured a research and development grant from Arts Council England, to develop a new play. This funding will employ five actors, one director, a playwright and other creatives for two weeks to produce a script and touring materials for a full-length production of a play based on Thomas Ingoldsby’s Mrs Botherby’s Story: The Leech of Folkestone.
Set in the depths of Romney Marsh, The Leech of Folkestone tells the macabre but humorous tale of a woman so fed up with her husband, she sets out to rid herself of him with the help of the local doctor. The play contains mediaeval folklore, comic and colourful characters, supernatural themes, and beautiful, dramatic descriptions of the southeast Kent landscape.
It is a thrill to have received our first Arts Council England grant as a theatre company. We are so pleased to be able to pay local artists to create a new and dynamic production based on a fantastic story. It is a great boost for our company and evidence of the importance of making local theatre with local artists using local stories.
